INTRODUCTION

Are you really passionate about mathematics, and want to challenge yourself beyond classroom mathematics? Do you want to sharpen your mathematical problem solving skills as well as to develop rigorous thinking? If yes, then this prep course is perfect for you. The modules used in this camp are developed exclusively for students who excel in classroom mathematics and seek to challenge themselves further. Students will learn precisely those topics needed to excel in national and international olympiads. This course is specially tailored to prepare and challenge even the very best students in Malaysia.

This course is open to all secondary school students. Please take note that this is not an SPM or PMR preparation course.

PACKAGES

There will be two packages: Beginner and Advanced.

The Beginner package is for students with limited or no prior exposure to math olympiad material. This includes students who have participated in olympiads without proper training and coaching.

The Advanced package is for students who have mastered the basics of math olympiad and want to develop their problem solving skills further.

Each package consists of four classes.

SCHEDULE

Beginner: 23-26 November 2009; 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily.

Advanced: 7-10 December 2009; 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily. (We are still taking registration. Walk in are welcome. Please download the above info pack for further details)

SYLLABUS AND TEXT

The course follows the international standard curricula for math olympiad, which covers four major topics: Algebra, Combinatorics, Number Theory and Geometry.

Algebra covers solutions of equations, inequalities, functions, sequences, and polynomials. Combinatorics covers bijective proof, counting principle, pigeonhole principle, binomial coefficients and principle of induction. Number Theory covers primes and divisibility, modulo arithmetic, numerical functions, and Diophantine equations. Geometry covers topics on plane geometry, including collinearity and concurrence, circle, triangle, polygon, and exotic geometries (inversive, complex, and analytic geometries).

The classes will be taught by Mr. Suhaimi Ramly, the Malaysian national team coach for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). He has been involved in math olympiad since 1998, and was selected to represent the country in the IMO three times. He won the national olympiad twice with a perfect score, and he was the first Malaysian to win an IMO Bronze Medal in 2000.

A group of facilitators will help run the course. They are former and current team members of the Malaysia IMO national team.

The textbook that will be used throughout the course is Basics of Math Olympiad (Volume 1-4) by Suhaimi Ramly. In addition, we will provide handouts and problem sets for the students.

Introduction

The origin of the Tournament dates back to the late 1970s in the USSR. The first Tournament was known as the Olympiad of Three Towns (Moscow, Leningrad and Riga) and was held in the 1979-1980 academic year. Participation quickly grew and the Tournament changed to its current name in the following year.

The Tournament had difficulty in obtaining political recognition in its early years, but its popularity grew and it finally won recognition in 1984 when it became a subcommittee of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The support of the USSR Academy of Sciences allowed the Tournament to become international. This attracted entries initially from Eastern Europe, particularly Bulgaria, where a national committee was formed. In 1988 the city of Canberra entered the 10th Tournament, becoming the first Western and English speaking city to participate.

The Tournament has continued to grow with over 100 towns participating in the most recent Tournament.

About the tournament
The tournament is open to all secondary school students, from Form 1 to Form 6 and to pre-university students who have not enrolled in first-year university studies. Each student participates in IMTOT individually.

There are two age groups: Junior and Senior.
• Junior: Form 1 to Form 3 students (in 2009 school year);
• Senior: Form 4 and higher.

For each age group, there are two papers: O-Level and A-Level. Student can choose to write one or two papers. For example, a Form 5 student can choose to write both the O-Level Senior and A-Level Senior papers, or he can choose any one.

Format

The O-Level paper (Junior & Senior) contains 5 problems. Each problem is worth 3 to 4 points.

The A-Level paper (Junior & Senior) contains 7 problems. Each problem is worth 4 to 10 points.

The total score for each paper is the sum of three problems with highest scores (therefore, it is a good strategy to focus on three problems only, rather than on all the problems).

TIDAK ramai yang tahu, bidang Matematik juga sebenarnya ada seni kreatif tersendiri. Bukan setakat bermain dengan nombor tetapi juga membabitkan pemikiran kreatif dan kritis bagi membolehkan seseorang itu layak digelar pakar Matematik.

Ini bermakna, pelajar sekolah khasnya digalakkan sentiasa berfikir bagi mencari jalan penyelesaian sendiri bagi setiap permasalahan dan bukan setakat menerima dan mengamalkan kaedah tertentu dalam buku pelajaran atau diajar guru.

Mohd Suhaimi Ramly, 27, yang kini bergelar Ketua Jurulatih Olimpiad Matematik Antarabangsa (IMO) Malaysia adalah antara genius Matematik yang terpilih sebagai juri termuda untuk menghakimi pengiraan markah pertandingan IMO peringkat dunia.

Anak muda itu mengakui, pertandingan IMO itu bukannya suatu yang mudah kerana ia membabitkan pelajar terpilih di seluruh dunia, namun di situlah terletaknya keseronokan menyahut cabaran sebagai peserta dan kini beliau bertindak selaku jurulatih.

Sehubungan itu, setiap kali tiba musim pertandingan IMO peringkat dunia membabitkan 108 negara, ketika itulah pasukan IMO Malaysia sibuk mencari bakat baru dan melatih mereka supaya berfikiran kreatif.

And last but not least…a special program for Malaysian future Math genius. Every year somewhere in June or July, they will be a competition namely the International Mathematical Olympiad. Last year it was held in Madrid Spain. And our team had for the first time since 1995 grabbed the silver medal!

UPDATE : Malaysian Olympiad Math team has won silver medal again in this year International Mathematics Olympiad held in Bremen Germany.

But we want more winner next year. Join us and discover your talent! Our program will be conducted by the tournament alumni and will be supervised by Mr Suhaimi Ramly (Malaysian Math Olympiad team lead trainer)
